I'm Eirene Chen and I'm excited to serve our community as San Carlos School Board Trustee. I have lived in San Carlos for 11 years with my husband Stephen and we're raising two boys, now in the 3rd and 5th grades.
I offer you a life-long passion for education, strong leadership skills, and the most working knowledge of our district. I am widely considered "the most experienced" candidate for the role. I am the only candidate with children in both elementary and middle schools, and am grateful for the endorsements of 60+ community leaders.
I spent the bulk of my 20s being an advocate for strong schools. My interest was sparked in 1983 when I was a junior in High School, and the report "A Nation at Risk" was released. In college, I worked in the Philadelphia Public Schools on education reform. When I was 25 years old I moved to Oakland and worked full-time, for two years, as a community advocate on to improve the Oakland Public Schools. I researched best practices and was a voice for low-income families. I then studied for my Masters in Education Policy, and MBA, both from Stanford University.
In my 30s, I began my business career (Learning Company, Google, Intuit, startups). I have 20+ years of experience in leading teams and organizations to make a big impact. I help people set bold visions, think strategically, measure progress, and be accountable to their goals.
In my 40s, I have served as classroom volunteer, PTA co-president, SCEF volunteer, and have been active in a district-wide coordinating council that serves all seven of our schools. These roles have given me a deep understanding of how our schools operate and the issues that concern parents, students, principals, teachers, and district staff.
I view School Board service as the perfect way to "give back" to my community, and to make use of my leadership skills and deep passion for Education.
I am grateful to be endorsed by San Carlos' finest community leaders including Tom Davids, Ron Collins, Jean Dehner, Beth Hunkapiller, Linda Teutschel, Bob Bredel, Adam Rak, Nicole Bergeron, and many more. Parents across all our seven schools and who are active in SCEF, coaching, theater, Scouts are also supporting me. Please see a full list of endorsements here.
Voting begins October 5th.
